When my second child was born 13 years ago, I was 45, overweight, sedentary, with dangerously high blood pressure & cholesterol. Add to that; unemployed, undereducated, and reeling from the financial crisis of 2008. But all I could think of was when Izzy turned 16, I would be 61; and if I did, I’d be in really bad shape. He was the catalyst that sparked me to get my act together. As he grew, he’d play along with me while I worked out. He loved to try to do pull ups on the old bar I had in the kitchen, just hanging there and struggling like he was doing them. Then one day he began to pull himself up. Now, he’s gotten to where he can do all different kinds of pull ups, has a rock solid body and a grip like an arm wrestler. I like to think while he inspired me, I instilled the beginning of a lifelong dedication to movement in him! That’s when I came up with one of my favorite mantras, “Let’s get fit together and stay fit together!” It’s been almost 13 years since I made this commitment, not resolution, to pursue my lifelong Self-First Dedication and Health Awareness Journey! Down 60+ lbs of fat, adding lean muscle and constant movement, plus blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Sure I’ve had setbacks, but have always been able to keep the Intrinsic Dedication with consistent forward momentum. I’ve turned roadblocks into highway markers that indicate my course changes that I’ve overcome to stay committed to my goal: To be better than I was yesterday…
“I want to inspire others. I want someone to say that because of me, they didn’t give up!” is another one of my mantras that fits well with “Let’s get fit together and stay fit together!”
